Otherwise, you will be liable for late charges, penalties, or interest on your pending tax dues. How to Estimate Your Pro-Rated Form 2290 Truck Taxes.
Every trucker and trucking taxpayer are liable to report and pay the Highway Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) using the IRS Form 2290 to operate their heavy vehicles and trucks on public highways. To determine if your heavy vehicle or truck qualifies for HVUT, you must ensure it meets these criteria,
- Total gross weight of 55,000 pounds.
- Estimated mileage of over 5,000 miles (or 7500 miles for agricultural vehicles) during the tax period.
Suppose your heavy vehicles fall into the criteria mentioned above, you are required to report and pay HVUT to the IRS using the Form 2290 and get the valid Schedule 1 receipt. On condition that your heavy vehicle or truck doesn’t fall into the taxable criteria, you should report Form 2290 HVUT returns for that vehicle under tax-suspended category. You need not pay any tax amount for tax-suspended vehicles. Once you report and pay the tax returns to the IRS, they will process them and send you the stamped Schedule 1 receipt as proof of tax payment. Schedule 1 receipt is one of the most important documents for insurance purposes, vehicle registration, license renewal and more.
Truckers must report Form 2290 HVUT returns to the IRS every tax period in advance. The tax period starts at the beginning of July and ends next June. Therefore, truckers should estimate Form 2290 HVUT returns for their heavy vehicles for the entire tax period and report them within the end of August every year. For pro-rated tax calculations, truckers must estimate Form 2290 taxes based on the vehicle’s first used month until the end of the ongoing tax period. For heavy vehicles first used in December 2024, taxes should be calculated from December 2024 through June 2025, with the deadline for filing set for January 31, 2025.
